Cheezy Sci Fi
From ThorsWiki
Thor is quite an afficianado of Teh Cheese... We loves us some really badd science fiction movies. Of course, we're pretty fond of the good science fiction too. If it's rocketships to Uranus or Triffids colonizing your lighthouse---we'll bring the popcorn. We've got your golden-age utopian space opera, your cold-war the-russkies-are-a-comin' space invasions, and of course, we've got your hot and cold running Mad Max nuclear World-War-III post-apocalyptic dysopianism (we need to order this by the 55-gallon drum to keep enough in stock).
Thor also happens to own most available-on-DVD movies with cheese value. There are tons of films which can't be bought (the selfish bastards!), and we'll try to keep an inventory and a watch for them. We'll advise you on how to build your collection, so you can impress your friends, and deplete your bank account (These are sure to appreciate nicely in 20 years--kind of like your old 8-track collection of Roy Clark or your vinyl disco tunes. We have many examples of fine cheese on various archeologically interesting media such as 12" laser-disc and VHS (which we shelled out $25 or more for) which now have a potential of maybe a whole 25¢ resale value -- clearly a hot investment opportunity). But, now, you must remember that the primary incentive for this is as a labor of love---and an obsessive/compulsive hoarding behavior.
We will claim many films for Sci-Fi that often get filed in the "Action" and "Adventure" genres (they never used to do that, but it's getting out of hand and high time for some push-back -- Terminator and The Matrix are ours dammit. We'll claim Laura Croft and Harry Potter too). If it's a fictional world with wierd technology in it (even if it's downtown Detroit, let-alone LA), fanciful creatures, or fantasy worlds -- they are all belong to us. We'll probably want it if they have any special effects that aren't car crashes and explosions. We will reserve the right to file anything into the Cheezy category -- we're wierd that way (we think that John Wayne's The Quiet Man is quite cheezy, but we're not sure we'll inflict it on you).
Note: Thor is not terribly into the following which some might classify as "Cheezy":
- Horror--except some horror-comedy and the of course many zombie, vampire and other monster movies -- If it's just gratuitous chain-saw splatter with no humor or kick-ass Milla Jovovich type bimbo-fu (to appropriate a Joe Bob Briggs term), we probably won't like it.
- Anime--except for some classics -- the daughters are the extremists in this category -- we just haven't been able to keep up. We went to the big Sukura-Con Anime convention -- most everyone was 20-30 years younger -- it was a bit surreal. Not the age mix you get at a Sci-Fi con.
- Japanese Monster Flicks--sorry Gamera, Godzilla and Mothra, there are just too many of you -- we have to work on aquiring the taste -- like we had to do with wasabi years ago (we loves it now). There are many Japanese (and other foreign) films we will include however.
Thor's tastes however are quirky and fickle, and are subject to rapid changes without notice. And consistency being the hobgoblin of little minds, we'll very likely recruit some Wierd Science stuff in there, like school science filmstrips, and juicy duck-and-cover type atomic-age propoganda. And, if Bill Shatner's narrating -- we'll probably want it. So, if we've seen it and we like it--irregardless of its species or even the phylum--it goes in the box.
But, we have to constrain scope somehow, so this is the general guideline.
Thor, being the Eternal Architect, has been thinking of establishing a coding system called The Cheese Matrix to cross-index sub-genres and plot devices, and certainly everything will cross-link to the mother node -- the IMDB and eventually to the Wikipedia, which has more extensive movie reviews/synopsies for some films.
